M365 STREAM (Classic) – end of life

As you may have already heard, Microsoft 365 Stream is currently in a crucial phase of its life cycle. We have addressed this issue before during our webinars, but Stream is undergoing a significant transformation in recent months. The shift to storing and sharing videos in SharePoint and OneDrive is almost complete.

The old Stream (Stream Classic), as it will soon be called, will soon be completely decommissioned. Microsoft has already taken significant steps, and the final shutdown of Stream Classic will happen soon. Here is a brief timeline of upcoming events:

  • Oct. 15, 2023 – Users can no longer open or use Stream Classic.
  • Jan. 31, 2024 – No new live events can be created in Stream Classic. Any live event scheduled after Jan. 31, 2024, will be automatically removed.
  • April 15, 2024 – Stream Classic will be completely decommissioned and automatically shut down.
  • Feb. 15, 2025 – Links and insert codes from Stream Classic are no longer redirected to migrated videos in OneDrive & SharePoint.

This is a critical period, and we would like to draw your attention to it through this e-mail. Microsoft’s next move is scheduled for Oct. 15, when users will no longer have access to Stream Classic. If you have not already established a migration plan, it could have significant implications for your operations.

Fortunately, you can still delay this action through the Microsoft 365 management center, which gives you extra time to create a migration plan, no later than April 15, 2024.

Migration

Now that we have been able to buy some extra time until April 15, 2024, it is essential to put a migration plan in place so that the content in Stream Classic is properly transferred to the appropriate locations within SharePoint and OneDrive. This is obviously only necessary if it is relevant to your organization, and this will be assessed on a per channel and video basis.

Microsoft has created a migration tool and a dedicated page within the Microsoft 365 and Stream Classic management portal, where you can analyze the content and take the necessary steps to migrate your content.
